Men’s Health: 5 Lifestyle Habits That Are Lowering Your Sperm Count

The present-day lifestyle habits have, indeed, damaged people’s health including the male sperm count. Lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, an increased dependency on technology gadgets, and even a sedentary lifestyle have caused more harm than good.

You may not know that some practices impact your health until it is time to conceive.

The inability to conceive may be due to infertility, which can stem from poor lifestyle habits. Male infertility is when a man has fewer chances of impregnating his female partner, usually because he produces low sperm quality.

Male infertility can sometimes be linked to sexual functions (e.g. libido, erectile dysfunction, and testosterone levels). Other times, it could be related to semen quality (e.g. sperm count and sperm motility). But infertility in men due to decreased sperm count has been prevalent.

Men as young as 25 fall victim to fertility issues, all thanks to the present-day lifestyle. In this post, we have listed the five lifestyle habits that can cause male infertility, particularly lowering sperm count.

     1. Working with a laptop on your thighs

One of the most common lifestyle habits is to keep a laptop on your lap while using it. It’s not surprising because almost everybody does that. But the outcome is that the heat from laptops directly affects the temperature of your testicles (which are located outside the body) to keep them cool.

And when you work with overheated laptops on your laps, very close to the scrotum, it might lower your sperm count and reduce your possibility of having children.

     2. Lack of exercise and being overweight

You’re predisposed to develop many diseases in the body; infertility included, when your body mass index (BMI) is high. Obesity also elevates the estrogen levels in the body, which outrightly affects sperm production. Extra layers of fat also increase the temperature of the body, particularly the groin area, which also heats the testicles.

     3. Adding too much soy to your diet

Soy is known to imitate estrogen in the body because of the availability of isoflavones in it. Soy is considered to raise estrogen production, thereby reducing testosterone levels. Reducing soy intake is advisable to attain and maintain a healthy sperm count.

     4. Wearing tight underwear or pants every time

Anything you do that increases the temperature of your groin area, where the scrotum is situated, is bound to reduce your sperm count. Wearing tight pants should be avoided as it heats your testicles and can reduce your chances of having babies.

     5. Not properly managing stress

Sperm count reduction can be due to stress. Everyday stress, for an extended period, can cause an imbalance of hormones in the body, affecting sperm health.

Conclusion

As much as it is beneficial to evaluate your daily lifestyle habits and upgrade your lifestyle to boost your fertility and overall health, be sure to speak with a medical practitioner about your concerns.
